Public Speaking

We as cadets and as future public safety officers are known to be all rounders, being able to do different tasks that are asked of us and become dynamic on everything that we do. Being able to construct elaborate Christmas decorations, establish reliable water and electrical systems, and on top of that we cadets also each have our own duties and responsibilities to the cadet corps. But as I have carefully observed, one of the key areas of improvement for us cadets is the ability to speak in public fluently with a touch of sophisticated articulation. The modern police officer may really claim the status as a professional. Never before in our history has the public experienced better police service, man for man and department for department. Yet, in this one area, us future public safety officers have disregarded a significant obligation to the public and to ourselves as a professional. The obligation to communicate and take action, become exceptionally well-spoken, especially on those legal issues that significantly impact how law enforcement is carried out.

Here are some reasons why public speaking is important for PNPA cadets:

Building trust: Public speaking is an effective way for police officers to build trust and establish rapport with the public. By communicating confidently and respectfully, graduates from PNPA can show that they are reliable and capable professionals.
Communicating effectively: Effective communication is crucial in police work. Whether police officers are briefing colleagues, giving testimony in court, or addressing the public, they need to be able to articulate their thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely.
Crisis management: In high-stress situations, effective communication can be the difference between success and failure. Graduates from PNPA need to be able to communicate calmly and clearly in order to deescalate tense situations and ensure the safety of all involved.
Leadership: As future leaders in law enforcement, PNPA cadets need to be able to motivate and inspire others. Public speaking is a powerful tool for inspiring and mobilizing people toward a common goal.

The seminar made me realize the importance of public speaking and effective communication in which we as public safety officers should practice, as we are primarily based in the community and it is imperative for us to be well in touch and have adequate communal relationship with them mainly through our constructive communications via our ability to speak in public and be highly articulate about our subject matter. Communication and public speaking is one of the fundamental aspects in de-escalation being greatly depended upon to assist in transforming public perceptions of police and enhancing neighborhood relations. Police agencies are putting more emphasis on de-escalation strategies when it comes to hiring new officers, making arrests, and engaging with the public as a result of recent events and the high level of community-police tensions that are now present in towns around the nation. The top chiefs and officers have understood for a long time that effective communication may be achieved. Just as they say “Sometimes when a person is in crisis, all they need is to be heard.” educate the public about their basic rights during police operations.
